The Return of an Admin: Reflections on Leaving and Rejoining Wikia Communities 'i am alive wiki'
It's been quite some time since I last graced these virtual halls. The reasons behind my departure were complex and multifaceted, but ultimately boiled down to a combination of burnout and feelings of disconnection from the community that had once brought me so much joy.
However, as they say 'absence makes the heart grow fonder,' or in this case, perhaps more accurately phrased as 'absence can also lead to an increased appreciation for what was lost.' Whatever the reason may be, I'm back – and ready to dive headfirst into my role as a wikia admin once again.
As we hurtle towards another New Year's Eve (or simply New Year's depending on your geographical location), it feels like an opportune moment to reflect on both past experiences and future aspirations. What lessons can be learned from our mistakes? How might we avoid repeating the same errors of judgment that led us down a path we now regret?
For myself, my time away has been nothing short than enlightening – if somewhat painful at times. It forced me confront certain aspects about my own behavior and approach to online interactions that I had previously either ignored or conveniently glossed over.
As someone who spent countless hours honing their craft within the world of wikis (and beyond), it's humbling to acknowledge how quickly one can become complacent in their role – so much so that they forget why they initially took up residence here in the first place. The pressures and demands placed upon us as administrators are numerous, varied, and often thankless; yet despite this reality, many continue to soldier on – driven by a deep-seated passion for preserving knowledge and fostering growth within our respective communities.
As I reimmure myself back into these digital corridors once more (with apologies in advance to anyone who may find my writing style somewhat rusty upon first perusal!), I am reminded anew of the importance that community plays at every level. It is through shared experiences – both triumphal and otherwise – that we learn, grow, and ultimately become better versions of ourselves.
